Spaces in your togetherness

jonathan and bell

Her husband had scarce been home a fortnight when an unexpected visitor by the name of Major Colquhoun Grant came to call. A handsome man of average height, finely dressed in the Scarlet uniform of an officer, he seemed to stand out, harsh, among the pale colors of her sitting room. Arabella felt her heart leap to her throat. Surely they could not have need for Jonathan again so soon. The war had only just ended.

The Major must have seen some of the panic on her face because he was quick to assure her that he was there purely on a personal basis.

“I merely came direct from a meeting and made the impulsive decision to visit Mr. Strange before securing my own lodgings.”

If You Go Down To The Woods Today

Captain George K. H. Coussmaker by Joshua Reynolds

“Colonel De Lancey!”

De Lancey’s head shot up as he realised he hadn’t been paying attention to a word Lord Wellington was saying.

“Yes, my lord?”

“I asked you if the boots the men are so desperately in need of have arrived yet.” Wellington frowned. “Well?”

“I’m not certain, my lord.” De Lancey looked down and shuffled the papers in front of him, cringing inwardly as he imagined the disapproving glances he must be getting from the older staff officers. “I’ll have to go and check.”

His commander’s eyes narrowed. “Very well,” he said, “make sure you do.”

An Unexpected Consequence of the Removal of Brussels to North America

Alfred_Jacob_Miller_-_Fort_Laramie_-_Walters_37194049

The rifle was pointed directly at his chest and Pearson Denby wondered if he had finally run out of luck. Just in case, he turned his eyes to the mountains – those sharp, majestic peaks the French trappers had named in comparison to a woman’s breasts – and took a deep breath. Their sheer sides were covered with snow, their jutting tips so high above catching the light of the westward-sinking sun. If this was the last sight he would see in life, he had no reason to complain.

Title: An Unexpected Consequence of the Removal of Brussels to North America

Author: onstraysod

Characters: William De Lancey/Colquhoun Grant, Jonathan Strange and Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington

Summary: In the tragic wake of the Battle of Waterloo, Major Grant finds his life turned upside down by an unexpected result of one of Jonathan Strange’s spells.

Author’s Notes: For solitaryjo. An understanding of the circumstances of this story relies upon a familiarity with Footnote 1, Chapter 40, ‘Depend upon it; there is no such place’ of the novel, which was not depicted in the series. I have also followed – very loosely – the historical events of the Battle of Waterloo rather than the depiction in the series. I have tried to adhere to the historical timeline and historical facts as far as possible, but there are no doubt some major inaccuracies and inconsistencies, as well as some plot holes big enough to drive a truck through. For these, I apologize in advance.

Author’s Disclaimer:The characters in this story use terms for Native Americans that, while incorrect and insensitive today, would have been used at this time in history.

Breeches of Etiquette

tumblr_nyzrropzE41ubl49qo1_1280

It was a sweltering night in northern Spain and Lord Wellington’s officers were enjoying a well-earned rest after the exertions of the previous day’s battle. Now that the French had been driven back to a safe distance, they finally had time to relax and take in their surroundings.

Sitting around a fire on the shore of a small lake, they passed around the bottles of wine they had liberated from the enemy and entertained each other with stories of their daring victories and narrow escapes. Coats and sashes were discarded with abandon, and many of them removed their boots and stockings and wandered down to the cool water to relieve their aching feet.

Interlude

There was a great deal of relief and a hint of a smile on Wellesley’s face as he watched them help each other to their feet.

“Well,” he said, “from what I gather, you’ve had quite an adventure. Things are obviously going to have to change around here but I don’t think anyone is in a fit state to make any decisions right now. Go home, get some rest, and we’ll talk about it tomorrow night.”

Emma left first, fending off Childermass’s attempts to persuade her that he had her best interests at heart and should definitely escort her home. Strange followed with his arm around Bella, somehow managing to make it look for all the world like he had just been on a cosy date and not a nightmare journey to another dimension.

The Windmills of Your Mind

“He’s in again,” green sparks cascaded from the cocktail shaker as Strange expertly spun it into the air and caught it in his left hand.

“What?” De Lancey was watching the group of young people who had just come in and his head was full of ideas for the night’s set.

“Old misery-guts in the corner,” Strange gestured with the shaker before unscrewing the lid and pouring the contents into a frosted glass. He pushed the drink across the bar, “just bloody sits there on his own all night. Every time. I’m surprised you haven’t managed to get through to him yet. Losing your touch?”

Happiness is a Red Tail

fox

Jonathan Strange was not in the best mood that January evening.

The mails had come earlier in the day and, yet again, there had been no letter from Arabella. Doubts that he would never before have entertained crept unbidden into his mind. Had she tired of waiting for him? Had she left Soho-square and returned to her brother’s house, disgusted with her magician and with the magic that had taken him from her? Had she received none of his letters and believed that he had forgotten about her? Or, worse yet, that he had been killed? A million fears wrapped themselves around him and would not let him go. They gnawed at him with cold teeth and that was the very last thing he needed that night.

Not Merlin

notmerlin3

“Not Merlin, my lord, if you please,” Strange protested when Lord Wellington first hailed him by that name. Merlin, as Strange tried to explain, if indeed he ever existed, was quite the wrong kind of magician for him, or English magic, to be associated with. Wellington dismissed these objections with some impatience, while Major Grant looked on with his usual sardonic expression.

The Perils of Fatherhood

foxes again

“They’re still following me, aren’t they?” Grant lengthened his stride and kept his eyes fixed straight ahead.

De Lancey looked over his shoulder and tried not to laugh at the sight of the three cubs trotting along at the major’s heels.

“Afraid so,” he couldn’t suppress a chuckle, “I think they want to get to know their father.”

Grant narrowed his eyes and gave him a withering stare, “well, they are going to be disappointed then.”

Call of the Wild

fox in snow

“Again?” Grant sighed “Must I?”

They were sitting in the kitchen of an abandoned farmhouse several miles from the French camp and had spent the last few hours trying to come up with an alternative plan.

“I’m afraid so, Major,” Strange did not look too happy about the prospect himself, “Lord Wellington needs the information and I can see no other way of obtaining it.”

”Are you certain these … transformations.. are not going to have any lasting effects?” De Lancey gave voice to Grant’s own concerns.

“Oh, I wouldn’t worry. From what I can tell, three times should be perfectly safe, although it may start to get a little more risky after that.”
